INSIDER: Is Ilhan Omar next? Dem primary opponent sets his sights on ‘Squad’ radical

The shocking loss in Tuesday’s Missouri primary that effectively ended the congressional career of Cori Bush should put another “Squad” member on notice.

By being thumped by her AIPAC-backed opponent, the BLM activist became the second of the mouthy cadre of left-wing lawmakers to be rejected by voters after Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was bludgeoned in his June primary.

Next up is Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) whose virulently anti-Semitic rhetoric is second only to Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and her day of reckoning could be coming in next week’s matchup with Don Samuels in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

Samuels, a former Minneapolis City Council member took to X to congratulate Wesley Bell for his win over Bush.

“Congratulations, Wesley! It’s clear that Democrats around the country are ready to move on from those who put politics above the people. In just one week, MN CD5 has the opportunity to do the same. To everyone in Minneapolis and the suburbs, I hope to earn your support,” he wrote.

It will be the second matchup between Omar and Samuels, with the Somali-born firebrand narrowly eking out a win in 2022 but it’s two years later and the strident anti-Israel rhetoric from “The Squad” over the war in Gaza isn’t playing well with voters, as Bush and Bowman can attest to.

Omar does enjoy a huge demographic advantage in her district which may as well be called Little Somalia. Pro-Israel groups have been reluctant to invest too many resources in the race and a spokesperson for the extreme-left Justice Democrats is feeling confident.

“I think they know that Congresswoman Omar is an extremely strong incumbent and has shored up a lot of local support and also has a pretty incredible record in the district of not only things like constituent services but also leading on policies and initiatives that actually help everyday people in that district,” the group’s communications director Usamah Andrabi told the Star Tribune. “I think they know that she is a deeply formidable threat, and that’s not to say that they won’t spend money against her even so.”

There is however one variable that could level the playing field. It’s an open primary.

Samuels has accused Omar of being a “pawn for Hamas” and also reminded voters of another big fan: fellow Jew-hater David Duke.

“’By defiance to Z.O.G. Ilhan Omar is NOW the most important Member of the US Congress!’ Mr. Duke wrote on his site, using the acronym for ‘Zionist Occupation Government,’ a term anti-Semites use to refer to the U.S. government as secretly controlled by Jews,” read a 2019 Associated Press article shared by Samuels.

“Don understands that real progress requires more than just talk, it requires leaders willing to find common ground, work hard, and deliver solutions for the biggest challenges that we face today,” the underdog candidate’s website states.

Voters go to the polls on August 13.
